The visit took place as part of Germany’s ongoing and principled support for Ukrainian cultural institutions — support that has become all the more vital in the context of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.

We are deeply grateful to Mr. Ressel and to the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ukraine for their continued attention to Babyn Yar — a site that is not only a place of tragedy, but also a symbol of remembrance, reflection, and responsibility.

“Babyn Yar is a space where memory is not preserved in silence, but activated for the sake of the future,”  said Rosa Tapanova, Director of the Reserve.  “Here, we do more than document history. We foster dialogue that reminds us of the value of every life, the importance of freedom, and the danger of silence.”

As Ukrainian cultural heritage faces daily threats and destruction, the solidarity of international partners is essential. The memory of the 20th century’s genocides is not only a matter of historical record — it is also a powerful tool to confront contemporary forms of totalitarianism.

We deeply value the partnership and support of German diplomatic and cultural institutions. Our special thanks go to the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ukraine, a long-standing collaborator in our shared work on remembrance, education, and cultural resilience.

The memory we preserve today lays the foundation for a freer, more just world tomorrow. As Ukrainian cultural heritage faces daily threats and destruction, the solidarity of international partners is essential.
